IF Nigeria is to truly develop, then it must focus on manufacturing. A recent report by the United Nations observed that a larger percentage of the country’s population live below the poverty line.
Although agriculture employs many people in the country, the manufacturing sector continues to lag behind, hence, the value added to agricultural produce remains minimal.
Unfortunately, the manufacturing capacity in the country has remained below 40 per cent and many firms have had to close down operations due to the harsh business environment, particularly as a result of the current economic recession being experienced in the country.
However, the manufacturing sector should be both the stimulus and pivot of economic and social growth, if growth is to translate into jobs for the teeming and growing unemployed population of the country.
