Fire guts government secondary school, Gboko

The male hostels of Government Secondary School, Gboko area of Benue State was, on Wednesday, razed down by fire.

Our correspondent gathered from an eyewitness, who identified himself as Jiji Jack, that the students, who had resumed class, noticed flames in their hostel around 8:30 am.

The eyewitness explained that the fire, which spread fast, destroyed some properties which included the Green and Orange houses of the Male hostel.

According to him, the fire also destroyed JAMB/WAEC/NECO candidates documents, cash, foodstuffs and other belongings of over 200 students.

“Also part of the red house of the Male hostel was particularly affected. Though, no life was lost,” Jack said.

Two SSS 3 students, Juku Samuel and Ortabe Kingdom told our correspondent that the fire started after they had resumed class for the day.

They further said they noticed flames oozing out from the male hostels.

Samuel said that some of the students wanted to rush to the hostel to see if they could save their belongings but were prevented by the teachers.

The cause of the fire could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report but the students explained that the electricity of the hostel was fluctuating that Wednesday morning.

Efforts to speak with the School Principal, Mr Francis Iorfa Tarkumbur were not successful as his lines were unavailable.
