Two persons, including the son of the late former chairman of the Oyo State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Wasiu Abubakar, popularly known as Tawa, were feared dead during a cult clash in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Friday afternoon.
The victims are Ibrahim Kola, the son of Tawa and another person identified simply as Isan.
The clash, which was between the Eiye and Ake confraternities of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, occurred at a joint around Elewure area of Sango, Ibadan, and was said to be a reprisal attack.
According to eyewitnesses, two persons were seen lying lifeless a few moments after the clash ended before policemen got to the scene of the incident.
Speaking with Sunday Tribune on the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Gbenga Fadeyi, said one person was shot dead and his body had been deposited at the morgue.
He, however, did not disclose the name of the dead. He added that though the identity of the deceased was yet to be ascertained, the police were intensifying efforts to make arrests.
Fadeyi allayed fears among residents around Sango of further reprisal attacks to avenge the deaths, stating that calm had been restored in the area.
“There was a cult clash at Elewure axis, Sango, Ibadan in which one person was shot dead and efforts are being intensified to make arrests.
“The corpse has been deposited in the mortuary. The police went to the area and normalcy was restored.
“Efforts are being intensified to bring to book the erring cultists and those involved in nefarious activities,” Fadeyi said.
