EU recalls popular bleaching cream, Caro White lotion

The European Union’s (EU) Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) has recalled Caro White Skin Lightening Beauty Lotion, according to a public notification issued by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

According to a statement on NAFDAC’s website, titled “Public Alert No. 15/2023 – Alert on the Recall of Ivorian Made Skin Lightening Beauty Lotion,” the product has been recalled due to its non-compliance with the Cosmetic Products Regulation.

The lotion contains a high concentration of Kojic Acid, exceeding the allowable maximum concentration of one per cent.

This conclusion was reached by the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS).

The elevated levels of Kojic Acid in the lotion raise concerns about potential endocrine-disrupting properties, which can pose health risks to consumers.

Although Caro White Skin Lightening Beauty Lotion is not listed in the NAFDAC database, the agency has advised importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and vigilance regarding the product.

“The product authenticity and physical condition should be carefully checked. Members of the public in possession of the product should discontinue the sale or use and submit stock to the nearest NAFDAC office,” the statement read in part.

Healthcare professionals and consumers were also encouraged to report any adverse experience associated with the use of the product to the nearest NAFDAC office.
