A 35-year-old driver, Mufutau Tijani, was on Friday charged with drunk driving and damaging property worth N850,000 at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
He was, however, released on bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties, who must be gainfully employed.
Tijani is facing a three-count charge of dangerous driving, damage to property and causing bodily harm.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Police Prosecutor Simeon Inhonwa told the court that the driver committed the offences on March 24 at about 7.30 a.m. on Adepele Street, off Medical Road, Ikeja.
He said the accused drove a Toyota Corolla saloon car marked JJJ 641 EG recklessly and hit 22- year- old Victor Nwankwo.
“The accused’s vehicle rammed into the shop of a man, Patrick Amadi, damaging laptops valued at N850,000 and causing grievous bodily harm to Nwankwo which led to the amputation of his right leg.’’
According to the prosecutor, investigations showed that Tijani drove under the influence of alcohol which was found in his car.
The offences contravened Sections 19, 27, and 28 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2012.
The Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, adjourned the case until July 7 for mention.
