Dredging River Niger, solution to flood in hydro-electric producing areas ― Experts

Published by

Experts at a one day stakeholders meeting of the Hydro-electric power-producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) have agreed that dredging of River Niger is the only solution to the perennial problem of flooding in the hydro-electric power producing areas.

The meeting, which was organised by HYPPADEC in collaboration with its technical partners agreed dredging of River Niger should be taken into serious consideration.

The Managing Director of the Commission, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq-Yelwa told the gathering that the Commission came at a time when the Nation was suffering from financial and economic challenges.

Sadiq-Yelwa stated that his Commission is looking forward unto Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) to support it, but they have to see the level of our commitment in project planning and execution.

He explained that the Commission went around the affected States, Villages, and wards to see the situation the people are living in, the kind of environmental and economic suffering as well as social deprivation as a result of the presence of River Niger.

The HYPPADEC boss explained further that the aim of the meeting was to carry along stakeholders in affected areas in order to incorporate them into the project implementation.

“We don’t want to go into project execution without the inputs of the people. This is a higher-level meeting to get a higher-level concept on how to address the happenings,” he said.

In his speech, the Kebbi State Governor, Atiku Bagudu represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Babale Umar Yauri assured HYPPADEC that his administration is committed to cooperating and supporting in implementation, in order to motivate the suffering faced by communities affected by floods in the state.
