OVER what he described as most barbaric, the Bayelsa State Government has deep shock, as well as condemned last weekend’s shooting incident that has so far claimed 12 lives, while several others sustained serious bullet wounds at St Philips Catholic Church, Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, in a condolence message to the Government and people of Anambra Stat, said that it disheartened that people no longer have respect for the sanctity of human life, noting that it is abominable for any individual to take life, since no one can give life.
Dickson decried the way and manner arson, heinous crime is perpetrated, in society, describing it as a violation of God’s law contained in the holy book, even as he noted that perpetrators would surely be brought to justice.
The statement read in part; On behalf of the Restoration Government of Bayelsa State, the Chiefs and peace loving people of the State, I condemn in very strong terms the killing of innocent worshippers last Sunday morning at the St Philips Catholic Church, Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State”.
The Governor condoled Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State over the tragic and painful death of worshippers at the church, while commending the law enforcement agencies for the steps taken so far, and the need for greater vigilance in society, particularly around churches, mosques, sports venues and other areas densely populated by human beings.
Dickson also prayed for families of those shot dead and others with bullet wounds, the Christian community and the people of the state the fortitude to bear the painful but irreparable loss, as well as the repose of their souls; and speedy recovery of those that suffered bodily injuries.
Also, State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon Jonathan Obuebite regretted the gruesome murder of the innocent worshipper, even as expressed shock that the sacredness of the church premises was despised, as the gunmen entered and began to shot.
The Commissioner called on society to work in tandem with the law enforcement agencies by reporting questionable neigbhours to the police before they carry out their dastard acts of maiming and killings fellow humans, whereas none of them could give life.
He, however, condoled the Governor Obiano, the church, people of Anambra state and the Nigerians for the loss and called on the law enforcement agencies to e-invigorate surveillance around densely populated areas such as churches, mosques, markets among others.
