Delta govt tackles perennial flooding in Asaba

Published by

The Delta State government has commenced the clearing of drains and other water channels in Asaba to check  flood.

Pay loaders, tippers and other trucks have, for the past  three week, been engaged in  daily evacuation of drains on  major roads and streets around the capital city by the Office of the Director-General, Special Programmes.

The affected areas are Ogbelo Quarters, Okpanam, Ibusa, Nnebuisi, Jesus Saves, Anwai, SSS, High Court  and DBS Roads, all the link roads and streets around the cenotaph and behind Government House, Cabinet Office Road, GRA Police Station Road, among others.

The Director-General, Special Programme, Chief Frank Omare, who disclosed the new government’s approach to checking the flood problem in Asaba, said the state government was determined to seeking permanent solution to  flooding whenever it rains.

Omare said: “There are a good number of drains and water channels in Asaba and its environs. The governor is aware that the blocking of these drains and channels is the main cause of flooding. He has, therefore, directed regular clearing of these drains to channel the water to  Anwai River.

“In the past, Asaba residents suffered so much as a result of flood whenever it rains. Properties were destroyed, roads and streets were rendered impassable,”  Omare said.

The director-general further said: “to achieve the set goal, residents attitude towards the environment must change. They must stop dropping waste inside  drains and must ensure they clean their surroundings regularly and evacuate the debris to approved dump sites.
