One month after the outbreak of cholera was declared in Bauchi State, a total of 37 deaths have so far been recorded while several others are receiving treatment at the various designated centres.
According to data made available to Journalists in Bauchi, on Monday, by the Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency (BASPHCDA), Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, a total of 1,799 cholera cases were recorded between May 25, 2021, when the outbreak was announced and now.
According to the data by the Agency, Alkaleri; Bauchi; Darazo; Dass; Ganjuwa and Giade are the local government areas with reported cases of cholera in the State.
Other affected LGAs, according to BSPHCDA, are Jama’are; Kirfi; Misau, Ningi; Shira; Tafawa Balewa; Toro; Warji and Zaki while efforts are being intensified to ensure that the infection did not spread.
While speaking to our Correspondent vide telephone, Rilwanu Mohammed, said that already, the state government in collaboration with some international donor agencies have embarked on the construction of a 100-bed capacity Cholera Treatment Centre (CTC) at the Specialist Hospital to take care of the victims.
He added that the government has directed that the treatment of the victims should be done freely in other to augment the economic hardship facing the people assuring that all the required drugs for the treatment have been made available.
The BASPHCDA Executive Chairman, however, appealed to residents of the state to imbibe the culture of cleanliness by clearing every dirt in their vicinity because according to him, cholera is airborne which can be transmitted easily.
He then advised people to immediately report to the nearest health centre as soon as they noticed the symptoms of the disease assuring proper referral will be made to the designated treatment centres across the state.
It will be recalled that the immediate past Commissioner for Health in the State, Dr Aliyu Maigoro Mohammed, had on May 25, 2021, announced the outbreak of cholera, with a 37-year-old housewife who reported the disease at the Burra General Hospital in Ningi LGA on April 24, 2021.
Aliyu Maigoro also disclosed then that 20 people had died from the disease, while 322 people affected were being managed.
Meanwhile, the Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (BSPHDA) has said that the deadly disease has now spread to six more local government areas from the initial nine, making it 15 Local Government Areas of the state.
