The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Monday began a Continuous Voters Registration, CVR, training for 36 members of staff drawn from 18 states, in Benin, Edo State capital.
The participants at the training, who were drawn from the South-West, South-East, South-South states, as well as Benue State, are expected to undergo a three-day training at a workshop put together by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, IFES, under the tutelage of officials from the INEC Headquarters in Abuja.
Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Johnson Sinikiem, while declaring the workshop open, noted that CVR would commence on June 28, 2021, hence the need to train the Commission’s staff for the crucial task ahead.
“it is expected that this workshop will identify gray areas during the last exercise in view of resolving them, proffer solutions to technical problems encountered in the field, propose to the Commission effective logistic towards achieving our goals, staff training and provision of the efficient system”, the Edo REC added.
According to him, “Voter registration is an integral part of our electioneering process hence the need for this worship. The Voters Registry Department should ensure that the core values of the commission – transparency, integrity, excellence are professionalism are observed when the exercise begins in June”.
Professor Bolade Ayinla, Chief Technical Adviser to INEC Chairman, said the Commission was committed to designing an improved registration system through the deployment of an online portal where eligible voters could commence their registration and harped on the need to expand voters access to polling units and introducing a new generation of voters registration technology and equipment.
He noted that the workshop was part of the preparation toward ensuring a seamless and conducive environment for the successful take-off and conduct of the CVR exercise.
Saray Jah, Country Manager of IFES, assured that they would continue to support INEC’s quest for an improved electioneering process in the country.
Also speaking, the National Commissioner, May Agbamuche, urged the participants to eschew dishonesty and be diligent.
