Court remands 3 for kidnapping in Ebonyi

23 years old, Onuabuchi Orime, and three of his accomplices have been remanded in the prison custody for allegedly involved in kidnapping and conspiracy by a Magistrate Court sitting in Abakaliki.

The suspects and their accomplices were alleged to have kidnapped three victims namely Oliver Ojima; Ekpe Ozoko; and Ekpe Peter, until luck ran out of them and they were arrested.

It was alleged that the accused persons and others, now at large, committed the offence on November 3, 2019, at  Ukwuagba-Ngbo community in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.

They were arraigned on four counts of unlawful kidnapping, felony, and conspiracy.

The police prosecutor, ASP Mathias Eze, told the court that the offences were punishable under sections 516A (a) and 4 (1) (a) of the Criminal Code, Cap 33 Vol. 1; and Cap 55 Vol. 2, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.

The charges read: “That you, Onuabuchi Orime ‘m’, Okposi Mathias ‘m’, Idienyi Chijioke ‘m’, Akota Goodwin ‘m’, others in MAB/791C/2019, MAC/24C/2020 and others now at large, on the 3rd day of November, 2019, at Ukwuagba Ngbo, in the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit; kidnapping, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 516A (a) of the Criminal Code Cap 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.

“That you Onuabuchi Orime ‘m’, Okposi Mathias ‘m’, Idenyi Chijioke ‘m’, Akota Goodwin ‘m’, others in MAB/791C/2019, MAB/24C/2020 and others now at large, on the same date and place in the aforesaid Magisterial District did unlawfully kidnap one Oliver Ojima ‘m’ and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 4(1) (a) and punishable under section 4 (2) of the Ebonyi State Internal Security Enforcement and other related matters Laws Cap. 55, Vol. 2, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.

“That you Onuabuchi Orime ‘m’, Okposi Mathias ‘m’, Idenyi Chijioke ‘m’, Akota Goodwin ‘m’, others in MAB/791/2019, MAB/24C/2020; others in MAB/791C/2019 and MAB/89C/2019 and others now at large, on the same date and place in the aforementioned Magisterial District did unlawfully kidnap one Ekpe Joseph Ozoko ‘m’ and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 4 (1) (a) and punishable under section 4 (2) of Ebonyi State Internal Security Enforcement and other related matters Laws, Cap. 55, Vol. 2, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.

“That you Onuabuchi Orime ‘m’, Okposi Mathias ‘m’, Idenyi Chijioke ‘m’, Akota Goodwin ‘m’, others in MAB/791C/2019, MAB/24C/2020 and others now at large, on the same and place, in the aforementioned Magisterial District did unlawfully kidnap one Ekpe Peter ‘m’ and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 4 (1) (a) and punishable under section 4 (2) of Ebonyi State Internal Security Enforcement and other related matters Laws, Cap. 55, Vol. 2, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.”

The Chief Magistrate, Nnenna Onuoha, directed that the accused persons be remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Abakaliki, and their case file transferred to the Director of Public Prosecutions in the state for advice.

The case was adjourned till January 29, 2020, for report of compliance.
