The Centre for Blacks and African Arts and Civilisation (CBAAC) has celebrated African music, dance and hairstyles at a two-day conference held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The first day of the conference was entitled, ‘Celebrating the rich diversity of black and African traditional music, dance and drama through the promotion of traditional music and rhythms, drumming and dance steps.’
Speaking on this theme, the Director-General, CBAAC, Mrs Olubunmi Amao urged that efforts must be exerted to ensure that African dance and music are guarded jealously.
Olubunmi stated that this is important because Music and Dance are vehicles upon which the cultures are transmitted from generation to generation.
She recalled that both African Music and Dance have witnessed tremendous transformation through the infusion of traditional elements in contemporary music over the years.
The Director-General, therefore, advised that rather than view traditional music and contemporary music as rivals, they must be viewed as all-important since both have been employed to mutually reinforce each other and above all promote the Culture and heritage of the African people.
While speaking on African hairstyles, dress culture and fashion in contemporary times which was the theme for the public lecture on day two, Mrs Olubunmi explained that lack of proper skills and knowledge for packaging cultural/creative goods, lack of skills for digital networking and marketing strategies, inability to keep up with current trends are issues bedevilling the industry which propelled the public lecture.
Amao further explained that the Agency is using the medium to give proper and adequate attention to the endeavours by deploying effective strategies to fully develop them as small and medium enterprises for socio-economic development.
The Creative/Managing Director, Schon Afrique, Mrs Folake Majin, who was the guest speaker, noted that the youths must be infused with the knowledge that the country has a glorious past comparable to the best in the world if not better than most, adding that they need to be proud and confident in who they are.
She concluded by saying “Indeed the labour of our heroes past concerning our rich awesome mind-blowing heritage ‘shall not be in vain.”
Renowned Nigerian Film actor and Playwright, Jimi Solanke described Africans as the most fashionable people in the whole world, adding that Africans have been making fabrics right from their ancestors, noting that the fabrics are getting more relevant now.
He identified African fabrics like Kente, Adire, Aso-oke and many more, adding that they are being used all over the world.
