The Tiv Catholic community of Jalingo diocese has expressed worry over the continued killings and terror activities in Nigeria.
This was contained in a communique issued at the end of a two-day annual conference/ celebration of feast of St. Augustine, held at St. Robert Bellarmine’s institute for catecheses and religious education, Jimlari, Taraba State.
The communique which was signed by the president, Dr. Denis Hembaor, quoted the Catholic community as lamenting the continued attacks and rising killings in the country, expressed that Nigerians and the nation were heading to a place of no return.
“While we condemn the general insecurity in the country, we call on the government and all stakeholders in Taraba State to make more efforts to bring lasting peace in central and southern parts of the state which have not known peace since 2014.”
“Since 2014, most families in the central zone of the state have lost their sources of livelihood and have been denied access to their farmlands. Any attempt for them to go back to their homes in certain places is tantamount to inviting death.”
The crisis in Southern Taraba in 2019 through 2020 have equally forced people into IDPs’ camps without any hope of when to return to their ancestral land.
“We want to call on the Taraba State government to redouble her efforts in resolving the crisis and make adequate security arrangement for the safe return of all the displaced persons back to their homes in Wukari, Ibi, Donga, Takum, Gassol and Bali Local Government Areas and resettle them accordingly.”
“We particularly condemn attacks on our Churches, the recent killings and reprisals in Jos, Benue and mass abduction of innocent and helpless school children in parts of the country.”
While condemning in unequivocal terms, all forms of killings, criminality and marginalization of minorities across the nation, the religious community further expressed that, “the state of killings across the country and the rise of secessionist agitators in some parts of the country is enough hand writing on the wall for our leaders to urgently address the issues before we get to a point of no return.”
“We are deeply worried with the turn of events in our dear country, Nigeria. Nigeria is gradually being turned into a killing field and the small numbers of death no longer matter and worthy of reportage in the media. We only get to know or hear of killings when the numbers starts from ten (10) upwards.
“The state of killings across the country and the rise of secessionist agitators in some parts of the country is enough hand writing on the wall for our leaders to urgently address the issues before we get to a point of no return. We therefore, condemn in unequivocal terms, all forms of killings, criminality and marginalization of minorities across the nation,” the communique read.
