Common causes of bleeding after sex include: Injury during sex, vaginal dryness which occurs when the skin is dry and becomes extremely vulnerable to damage.  Engaging in intercourse before arousal as well as infections such as yeast infections, and sexually transmitted infections can also cause bleeding after sex. In addition, cervical or endometrial polyps or fibroids and cancer of the cervix can also cause the problem. Finally, diseases that cause abnormal bleeding or clotting can increase the risk of postcoital bleeding. Blood-thinning medications may also have this effect. In view of the above, a thorough examination by your doctor is the best solution to your problem.

I recently read on the social media that someone can faint or slump in the bathroom if you start taking your bath by washing the head first. The posting said that if the head is washed first, the cold water will make blood to rush to the head and rupture the blood vessels to the head. To avoid this, we were advised to start our bath by washing our feet and gradually moving upwards. I want to know if this is true

Abike (by SMS)

There is  no truth or any scientific basis for this belief. However, Individuals with a history of heart problems or stroke are advised to use lukewarm water to bathe, and to prevent chilling during and after taking a bath. For most of us without significant health issues, our body has an excellent compensatory mechanism to make the necessary adjustments to changes in temperature for a reasonable period, and that can easily be done by our bodies during bath.  In many instances, it’s not the bathing but the straining during bowel movement which can trigger a stroke or heart attack in the bathroom. When one strains, when one is constipated, for instance, one holds down one’s breath and bears down excessively—which is called a Valsalva maneuver. This increases the abdominal pressure and helps force out the stools. But this action is also very stressful to the heart and the circulatory system, as it increases the pressure inside the chest, thus reducing the blood flow to the heart. In addition, some elderly and frail individuals slip in the bathroom. When they hit their heads, they suffer bleeding in the brain (subdural hemorrhage). Therefore, one must take precaution—use bath bench or stool, don’t remain standing. Have grab bars installed on the bathroom walls. Spread out bath mats with suction cups to cover slippery surfaces.

Since 2018, I have had problems with severe pains in my anus which has led to constipation. My belly is very stuffy and airtight . I always want to fart but I can’t.  In addition, my anus is so tight that it can hardly admit my ring or index finger. My doctor called it ‘Anal Stricture’ and advised that I take plenty of fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately, the situation has only got worse. Is there any solution apart from surgery? If so, will the surgery allow me to do hard work as I want to join the Navy.

Shuab(by SMS)

You will certainly need surgery to relieve the anal stricture. The procedure is harmless and effective when carried out by experts. In addition, the doctor will send a piece of the flesh near your anus to the Laboratory for proper analysis in order to know the underlying cause of the stricture. Kindly see a Surgeon at the nearest Specialist or Teaching Hospital to you.

Your mother and secondary school mistress are right while your friend is very wrong. As you rightly stated, your virginity protects you from the scourge of unwanted pregnancy and infections. You should therefore do all you can to keep it until you are ready for marriage.

Albert (by SMS)

What it means is that you unknowingly have High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) which has gradually weakened your heart to the extent that if care is not taken, your heart will fail to work properly again. Since you face the risk of a complete heart failure, you will need to urgently see your doctor for a proper medical check up and appropriate treatment.

Funmi  (by SMS)

Managing a fish allergy includes strict avoidance of the fish to which you are allergic. Doctors typically advise people who are allergic to one type of finned fish to avoid all types. If you are allergic to a specific fish and would really like to have other varieties of fish in your diet, speak to your allergist about testing for those varieties. Do not change your diet without guidance from your allergist. If your allergist gives you the go-ahead to eat certain types of fish, take extra precautions to avoid eating fish that has come in contact with the type of fish that causes your allergic reaction. Be advised that some restaurants may substitute cheaper types of fish for what is on the menu (for example, what is listed as red snapper could really be tilapia).

Due to the high risk for cross-contact during food preparation, it is best to avoid seafood restaurants in general, even if you plan to order something other than fish. Stay out of areas where fish is being cooked, as proteins may be released into the air during cooking. Treatment for fish allergy includes strict avoidance of the fish to which you are allergic. Because fish is often implicated in cases of food-induced anaphylaxis, allergists advise fish-allergic patients to treat symptoms of a reaction with epinephrine (adrenaline), which is prescribed by your doctor and administered in an auto-injector. Anaphylaxis can come on quickly and can be fatal unless epinephrine is injected as soon as you notice symptoms developing. Only epinephrine can reverse the symptoms of anaphylaxis; for less severe symptoms, you may find that antihistamines are helpful.

Blessing (by SMS)

Although, most babies get their first tooth between 4 and 7 months, but there’s a wide range of when it’s considered “normal” to start teething.  There is therefore no reason to panic if your son hasn’t cut a tooth at 8 months.  Exactly when your baby will start teething may even be hereditary among other factors. However, if your baby still does not have any teeth by 10 months, you may need to see a Paediatrician for a proper check up.

Although there have been claims of techniques for selecting a baby’s sex, (the methods range from using particular positions during intercourse to high-tech methods such as sorting sperm)  there is still no fool-proof method available yet.  What is certain however is that more and more women have been able to achieve a lot in life and are now able to play the roles that men usually play in families and in the society.

This is a good resolution which should be applauded. Many of the Teaching Hospitals in the country have Sperm Banks for the storage of donated sperms used for artificial insemination. In addition, there are a number of specialist and private hospitals that also run infertility Clinics. You can Google these facilities for more information.

My 8 year old daughter has always had incessant occurrence of nose bleeding. The ongoing harmattan has worsened her condition with the increased incidence of the nosebleed. Kindly suggest a solution to her problem. Thanks.

Adebisi (by SMS)

Nosebleeds (Epistaxis) can be frightening, but they aren’t usually a sign of anything serious and can often be treated at home. The inside of the nose is full of tiny, delicate blood vessels that can become damaged and bleed relatively easily. Nosebleeds are fairly common and most people will experience them every now and again. Anyone can get a nosebleed, but they most often affect: children between two and 10 years of age, elderly people, pregnant women, people who regularly take aspirin or anticoagulants, such as warfarin, people with blood clotting disorders, such as haemophilia. Common causes of nosebleeds include: picking your nose, blowing your nose very hard. a minor injury to your nose, changes in humidity or temperature like the ongoing harmattan. This causes the inside of the nose to become dry and cracked. Things you can do to prevent nosebleeds include: avoid picking your nose and keep your fingernails short, blow your nose as little as possible and only very gently and keep your daughter’s nose lubricated with Vaseline especially during the harmattan period. Nosebleeds aren›t usually serious. However, frequent or heavy nosebleeds may indicate more serious health problems, such as high blood pressure or a blood clotting disorder, and should be checked through a visit to your doctor.
