Borno students develop detection device to improve security

Published by

Secondary school students in Borno, have developed a detection device alongside other safety, security and engineering solutions aimed at improving safety and security in the state.

The projects were unveiled at the Future Prowess Foundation Innovation Showcase held in Maiduguri on Sunday.

The event, themed “Empowering Purpose, Scaling Innovation,” brought together students, educators and industry professionals to explore how school based ideas can be translated into practical solutions.

One of the key projects was a detection device designed to identify early signs of fire, including smoke, rising temperature, flames and gas leakage. Linked to a central control unit, the system triggers alarms and sends alerts to occupants and emergency services.

The students said the project was informed by repeated fire incidents in homes and public spaces across Borno.

The showcase also featured security and surveillance systems intended to support monitoring in residential areas, schools and public facilities.

The systems use cameras and sensors to enable continuous monitoring, remote access and early alerts.

In addition, students presented prototypes of a locally assembled helicopter and a driver-assisted car, reflecting growing interest in applied engineering and locally driven technological solutions.

Speaking at the event, Dr Kyari Bukar, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Inlaks Ltd, urged the students to focus on practical application, product development and local manufacturing partnerships.

He advised them to strengthen their designs by integrating multiple functions into single devices and to explore collaboration with Nigerian firms involved in sensor and electronic component production.

Dr Bukar also spoke on leadership and resilience, noting that the Future Prowess Foundation emerged in a region affected by conflict, and stressed that leadership is built on responsibility, consistency and integrity.

Organisers said the showcase highlights how young people in conflict-affected communities are applying knowledge and skills to develop practical solutions to everyday safety and security challenges.
