The Jigawa chapter of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) has said the chapter joined an industrial action in solidarity with other chapters despite enjoying financial independence by 80 per cent.
This was disclosed by the Chairman of the Jigawa state PASAN, Mr Umar Adamu while fielding questions to newsmen in Dutse, the state capital, noted that the Jigawa state branch joined the strike in compliance with a nationwide strike ordered by the national body of the association has shut down the state House of Assembly as part of the ongoing nationwide strike demanding for financial autonomy.
Mr Umar Adamu explained; “Even though the state chapter is enjoying almost 80 per cent financial autonomy, we have to join the strike in solidarity with others”.
According to him; “This is a national issue, but here in Jigawa we are enjoying financial autonomy about 80℅. This is because we are getting our funds directly from the treasury, we have assembly service commission with its chairman, secretary and other members”.
He added; “What we are demanding here in Jigawa is the implementation of our new salary structure, peculiarity allowances and 40 years instead of 35 retirement period, which are still pending”.
Also speaking, Mr Nura Idris, the National Ex-Officio in charge of the North-West Zone of the association, who monitored the exercise in the state, said the strike is nationwide and indefinite.
“I’m here for Jigawa PASAN chapter to commence the indefinite nationwide strike for the non-implementation of financial autonomy for the State Houses of Assembly.
“This is after we’ve earlier did 21-day warning strike which we extended by one week,” Idris said.
On his part, Mr Awwal Yakubu, the Provost of Public Complaint Commission (PCC) in the state, said they also joined the strike in solidarity with PASAN.
“PCC is under the National Assembly, so we are under the same umbrella, hence the need for us to join in solidarity,” Yakubu said.
Reports from the state indicated that the Jigawa state branch of the PASAN had shut down the Jigawa State House of Assembly Commission, situated at the Three Arms Zone in the state capital, Dutse.
