Army discovers mass graves, foils VBIED attacks in Borno

Published by

Nigerian Army troops have discovered mass graves containing the bodies of approximately 20 Boko Haram terrorists killed during previous encounters in the Timbuktu Triangle and buried by their cohorts.

The revelation was contained in a statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, and made available to journalists in Maiduguri on Wednesday.

He explained that troops of Operation HADIN KAI have recorded significant gains in the Timbuktu Triangle, disrupting terrorist networks and neutralising insurgents during recent operations.

According to him, key areas cleared include Tergejeri, Chilaria, and the Ajigin/Abirma general locations.

“During the conduct of these operations, troops made intermittent contact with fleeing terrorist elements and engaged them with high volumes of fire, resulting in the neutralisation of several terrorists,” he said.

Lieutenant Colonel Uba further disclosed that on 20 January 2026, while consolidating at a harbour area approximately six kilometres north of Chilaria, troops encountered two Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs).

“Through vigilance and swift action, one VBIED was successfully neutralised. The second VBIED breached the defensive position, affecting some logistics platforms,” he explained.

He added that some soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force paid the supreme price during the attack, while others sustained injuries.

“The wounded were promptly evacuated by Nigerian Army Aviation helicopters to 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital. Nigerian Air Force platforms provided continuous overwatch to ensure the safe extraction of casualties and security of ground forces,” he said.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Uba, the discovery of mass graves further demonstrates the heavy losses inflicted on Boko Haram and reflects the effectiveness of sustained military operations in the region.

He said the general security situation across the theatre remains stable, adding that troops’ morale and fighting efficiency remain high.

“Operations continue with sustained pressure on fleeing terrorist elements. Troops of Operation HADIN KAI remain resolute in their commitment to protect civilians, dismantle terrorist networks, and restore lasting peace and security across the North East,” he concluded.
