Sir Paul Chukwuma, a former governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has cited his desire to connect Anambra State with the national government as the reason behind his defection to the Young Progressive Party (YPP) ahead of the November 8, 2025 governorship election.
Speaking during his acceptance speech after emerging unopposed at the YPP governorship primary election held at the party’s secretariat in Awka on Thursday, Chukwuma said his ambition is anchored on the vision of securing greater opportunities for the state.
“I am contesting the election under the YPP political platform to enable me actualise my vision of connecting Anambra State to the centre,” he said. “YPP is a party of discipline, which is why I am contesting under its platform. Both the party and I desire good things for Ndi-Anambra.”
He pledged that, if elected, his administration would fully align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. According to him, joining the YPP would also allow him to promote peace, unity, and a sense of togetherness, especially in addressing the lingering issue of the Monday sit-at-home order across the South East.
Chukwuma reaffirmed his commitment to supporting President Tinubu and advancing the federal government’s development agenda within Anambra State.

“With my emergence as the YPP candidate, the political landscape in Anambra is set for an intriguing contest,” he said, while expressing gratitude to God for the successful conduct of the primary.
The YPP National Chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Bishop Amakiri, commended Chukwuma for his vision and described his candidacy as a strategic boost to the party’s political influence both within Anambra and at the national level. He expressed confidence that Chukwuma would add significant value to YPP’s fortunes in the coming election.
The governorship primary, conducted using the Option A4 method, was adjudged peaceful, transparent, and credible. According to Bar Vidieno Bamayi, Chairman of the Election Committee and National Secretary of YPP, Chukwuma polled 366 ‘yes’ votes, while eight delegates voted ‘no.’
