The Commissioner of Police in Oyo, Johnson Adenola, has highlighted strategies needed for proactive measures aimed at preventing future occurrences of fire incidents.
The Oyo CP gave the advice on Thursday when he received the representatives of the victims affected by the Wednesday fire incident at Aleshinloye International Market in Ibadan at the command headquarters, Eleyele, according to a statement by the police spokesperson, CSP Adewale Osifeso.
In attendance were DCP Abiodun Onuoha, who is in charge of Finance and Administration; DCP Usen Ekanem; the Commander, 4PMF, Ibadan; ACP Hakeem Ajasa; ACP Martins Bamigboye, in charge of the Special Investigation Department (SID); Alhaji Gazal Anifowose; Alhaji Waheed Alamu; Mrs. Beyiku Olufunmilayo and Mr. Y.Y. Olaniyan.
Among the preventive measures highlighted by the Commissioner of Police was the need to ensure that combustible materials are stored in designated areas to reduce fire risks.
The Oyo police boss also advised conducting timely checks on electrical systems to identify and rectify potential hazards.
He enjoined the traders to allocate resources to acquire adequate fire-extinguishing tools and equipment for traders.
He also spoke at educational workshops for traders on fire prevention techniques and emergency response procedures.
CP Adenola sympathised with the affected traders, reiterating the command’s commitment to ensuring security support at this challenging period.
He reassured the victims’ representatives of increased patrols and implementation of intelligence-led policing in the area to enhance security measures.
He also called for a joint effort with local market authorities to identify improvements that could be made for overall market safety.
The police commissioner reaffirmed the command’s unwavering dedication to the safety and well-being of all law-abiding residents of the state as guaranteed by the constitution and other relevant laws.
Earlier in their remarks, delegates from various prominent trading associations expressed their heartfelt gratitude towards the Police and Fire Service for their quick and effective response that played a pivotal role in getting the inferno extinguished.
They noted that the immediate actions prevented potential looting and safeguarded the community during such a moment.
The representatives also acknowledged the Police Command’s swift deployment of officers that enabled a rapid return to normalcy for business activities.
They called for reinforced security measures to safeguard the market from future emergencies.
