No fewer than 11 people have been killed in fresh attacks by suspected herdsmen.

The attacks occurred in some communities in Makurdi and Katsina-Ala Local Government Areas of Benue State respectively.

The suspected herders attacked the Anyom community of the Mbatyula council ward in Katsina-Ala on Wednesday and Zongo-Akiki village in the Mbalagh council ward early hours of Thursday.

A local in Makurdi local government who did not want to be named said that the suspected herdsmen stormed the Zongo-Akiki community early hours of Thursday and killed five people.

Confirming this, the Chairman of Makurdi local government, Anthony Dyegeh, said that youths were still searching for the missing persons.

According to Dyegeh, “the Fulanis laid ambush on some villagers who were going to the farm this morning, knowing fully well that many of the villagers would be going to farm after the downpour. They hid in the bush and allowed many of them to go and then run after them, macheted them.

“As am talking to you now, we have been able to recover five corpses and the youths are searching for others who are still missing.

“The village is behind the NASME barracks, North Bank, Makurdi.”

In the second attack at Anyom community of Mbatyula council ward in Katsina-Ala, six people were reportedly killed Wednesday afternoon.

The Media aide to the chairman of Katsina-Ala local government, Tertsea Benga, confirmed this to newsmen.

Benga said that the attackers invaded the victims’ farmlands with their cows, adding that the herders killed the farmers they met on the farm and took away some women while the whereabout of others remained unknown.

He added that the invasion of herders happened between 3 pm and 4 pm, on Wednesday, in Anyom, a Kastina-Ala community that borders Taraba State.

“Six people were confirmed dead at the moment while whereabouts of some remained unknown,” Benga said.

But the State Command spokesperson, DSP Catherine Anene, said she was yet to get any details about the two incidents.
