A pro democracy, the Defence of Nigerian Democracy and Constitution (CDNDC), on Tuesday said certain happening at present not angur well for the future of Nigeria as a democratic nation.
In a statement by its co-convener, Ariyo-Dare Atoye, the group stated that it was alarmed by what it described as the rising abuse of the rights of Nigerians by the state, urging the government to eradicate the thought of Nigerians living in fear of government.
Atoye stated that the people would not be cowed by “some misguided action to “silence critics, infringe on people’s fundamental human rights and undermine the right to fair hearing.”
The group condemned what it called the “provocative arrest and illegal detention of Ms Precious Chikwendu, wife of Chief Femi Fani-Kayode.
“We are not unaware that this contrived and vicious anti-corruption crusade will hit an appalling level where the state in an unbridled thirst to showcase powers and cover up it failings will be harassing, intimidating and victimizing ordinary citizens.
“We are miffed at the lack of discretion of the State to come down so low to the level of detaining an innocent lady with a toddler under the guise of fighting corruption when she has not flouted any law or resist the invitation of the EFCC,” the group stated.
