Abortion may be stopped if Trump wins — Pennsylvania Democrats

Pennsylvania Democrats see the suburbs as key to broadening their influence in the state legislature, and they are doubling down on reproductive rights as their central message to make it happen.

More than two years since the Dobbs decision, the Democrats are committed to keeping abortion rights front and centre for voters in Harrisburg, where their slim single-seat advantage in the state House contrasts with Republican control of the Senate.

This strategy has prompted a record investment in campaign ads focused on abortion and thousands of door-to-door efforts to make the case for protecting reproductive rights.

Democrats are confident that, just as in 2022 when they captured the state House, post-election analysis will point to abortion rights as the factor that secured their win. They view this message as crucial for mobilising suburban voters and bolstering Democratic candidates across the ticket, from Vice President Kamala Harris to state legislative candidates in battlegrounds like Arizona, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

While Democrats across the country are campaigning on abortion, Pennsylvania’s unique status as a state with a divided legislature has placed it in the national spotlight.

Suburban women in areas around Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are at the heart of the Democratic effort to secure the state House and expand their seats in the Senate.

The Democrats’ pitch emphasises their role as a safeguard against potential Republican moves to restrict abortion access in Pennsylvania, where the current law permits abortions up to 24 weeks of pregnancy.

However, these existing protections could make it challenging to convey the urgency of the issue. “In Pennsylvania, it’s not like Tennessee,” explained Anna Thomas, a Democratic challenger in a competitive Republican-held House district in the Lehigh Valley.

She further said, “It’s not like that many people know someone who has had to leave the state to get medical care. Making sure they understand the risk is a huge part of what we have to do to get out the vote.”
