Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, on Wednesday, distributed gratuities cheques to the tune of N500 million naira to pensioners in the state.
The governor during the presentation held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto Abeokuta, appreciated the pensioners for their show of understanding despite the delay in the payment of their entitlements.
Abiodun hinted that the payment of the N500m signalled the commencement of the paying process as agreed with the leadership of organised labour in the state.
He opined that the general well-being of workers, both serving and retired remained one of the utmost priority of his administration.
The governor noted that his administration inherited a backlog of non-payment of gratuities from the immediate past administration.
“Immediately after the inauguration of our Administration in 2019, Our administration began to review the various State policies and programmes as a strategy towards ensuring suitable life after retirement and empowerment of our elders.
“We were also about to begin the implementation of various laudable and landmark projects as part of our appreciation towards improving the standard of living of our respectable elders and actively engaging them towards building the future of our dear State together.
“We are gradually getting out of the economics of COVID-19 and it is just reasonable that as we give other sectors of the economy due attention for their post-COVID-19 sustainability, our elder statesmen and women also deserve due attention.
“Therefore, we will be distributing N500 million to pensioners under the State Government and Local Government employ This signals the commencement of a payment process for all our pensioners. Though many of these payments are inherited liabilities, I am assuring you that the process for all our pensioners, ” the governor added.
He advised the senior citizens to key into the various social intervention programmes of his government and sought their cooperation in moving the state forward.
