He abandoned us for another woman, wife tells court

A 49-year-old housewife, Morenike Asimiyu, has approached an Alagbado Customary Court in Lagos State, seeking the dissolution of her fifteen-year-old marriage to her husband, Ganiyu, due to irreconcilable differences.

Morenike, a mother of four, cited abandonment and lack of care as reasons she wants to end her marriage to her estranged husband.

She told the court that her husband abandoned her and her children and moved in with another woman.

”He left the house sometime in 2014 and found solace in another woman’s arm and since then, he has not looked back.

“He is adulterous and wicked; he does not know how the kids are faring now,” she said.

“I am the one solely responsible for the upkeep of the children. He doesn’t care about us but goes about with his lover treating her like a queen. He would post pictures of their outings on Facebook and tag me just to spite me. My family members have been supportive and they are insisting I divorce him and move on with my life since he disrespects me,” she said.

However, her husband, Ganiyu a furniture maker told the court that he left the house because his wife was too aggressive and demanding.

“I am in support of the divorce as I don’t love her anymore. She is too demanding and has not lifted a finger to work since we got married. She claims she is from a royal family and that working or doing menial business is beneath her.

“ She also involves her family members, especially her mother in our home affairs and I am not comfortable with that. Every quarrel is reported to her parents.“

He further told the court that his wife is  stubborn and did not take his orders.

“I am not adulterous, I have married another woman and I am living peacefully with her,” he said.

The Court President, Mr Olubode Sekoni, adjourned the matter till February 12 for continuation of trial.
