Abandoned newborn found at refuse site in Abuja

A newborn was reportedly found by a vigilante, Danjuma Alkali, in a refuse dump at Unguwar Shadadi in the Kuje Area Council of the FCT.

The vigilante was in the area at the time, said the baby was found on Tuesday, just when the vigilantes on duty were set to leave after the night patrol. 

According to him, the cry of the baby drew them to the scene, the dumpsite where they found the baby covered with a wrapper. 

It had also been confirmed by the vigilante member to Daily Trust that a similar incident happened two weeks ago when a newborn was found in the Kuchiako area, in an uncompleted building.

This incident was said to have been confirmed by the police.

In a statement, he said that the people around the area were alerted by the vigilantes, who said an elder of the community directed them to take the newborn to a motherless home.

The statement further reads, “As the social welfare department of Kuje Area Council is on strike, the baby was taken to the motherless home in the area as advised by an elder of the Shadadi community.”
