5 simple ways to prevent body odour from sweat

Published by

Sweating is a natural process that helps the body regulate its temperature. Whether a person is walking under the hot sun, exercising, or dealing with stress, sweat plays an important role in keeping the body cool. However, the challenge many people face is not the sweat itself but the unpleasant smell that sometimes comes with it. Sweat is mostly made up of water and salt and has little or no smell on its own.

Health experts note that body odour often develops when bacteria break down sweat on the skin. According to information published by the Cleveland Clinic, eccrine glands produce sweat that’s about 99% water. That’s why the sweat you notice on a hot day feels so watery and evaporates quickly.  In a warm country like Nigeria, where high temperatures are common, it can be difficult to stay fresh all day. Fortunately, there are practical habits that can help prevent body odour from sweat and keep a person feeling comfortable and confident.

Here are five simple ways to manage the problem.

Maintain proper daily hygiene

One of the most effective ways to prevent body odour from sweat is by maintaining good personal hygiene. Taking a bath regularly helps wash away sweat, bacteria, and dead skin cells that contribute to unpleasant smells.

Bathing at least once a day, especially after physical activity, can make a significant difference. Using antibacterial soap can also help reduce the bacteria that cause body odour. Particular attention should be paid to areas that sweat the most, such as the armpits, feet, and neck.

Drying the body properly after bathing is also important because bacteria tend to grow in moist environments.

Use deodorants or antiperspirants

Another reliable way to prevent body odour from sweat is by using deodorants or antiperspirants. Deodorants help reduce the smell caused by bacteria, while antiperspirants reduce the amount of sweat produced by blocking sweat glands temporarily. Applying these products after bathing, when the skin is clean and dry, allows them to work more effectively.

Some people may prefer roll-ons, sprays, or sticks depending on what suits their skin. For individuals with sensitive skin, choosing products labelled as mild or fragrance-free may help avoid irritation.

Wear breathable clothing

The type of clothing a person wears can also affect how much they sweat and how strong the odour becomes. Tight clothing made from synthetic fabrics can trap heat and moisture, creating a perfect environment for bacteria to grow. This may increase the chances of body odour.

Loose and breathable fabrics such as cotton allow air to circulate the body and help sweat evaporate more quickly. This simple change in wardrobe can help prevent body odour from sweat, especially during hot weather. Changing clothes regularly, particularly after heavy sweating, is equally important.

Pay attention to diet

Many people do not realise that what they eat can influence their body smell. Certain foods, such as garlic, onions, spicy meals, and some processed foods, can affect the way sweat smells after the body breaks them down.

These substances can be released through sweat glands, leading to stronger odours. Drinking plenty of water and eating fresh fruits and vegetables can help the body flush out toxins more efficiently. A balanced diet may therefore help prevent body odour from sweat and improve overall body freshness.

Keep underarm hair trimmed

Hair in the armpit area can trap sweat and create a breeding ground for bacteria. When sweat gets trapped in hair, it may take longer to evaporate, which allows bacteria more time to break it down and produce unpleasant smells.

Keeping the underarm area trimmed or shaved can reduce the amount of sweat that stays trapped and make it easier to clean the skin properly. This simple grooming habit can help prevent body odour from sweat and improve the effectiveness of deodorants.
