Attention, Oyo governor
The new governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde has started well; he had made some promises to the people of Oyo State, and from all indications, he has the capacity and potential to make such promises real for the people of the state.
However, as an unrepentant supporter of Makinde from his senatorial seat bid days, I find it imperative that I advise him against any face-off with the institution of chieftaincy institution in the state. I noticed in his inaugural speech that he had some grouse against the Alaafin of Oyo in his tampering with the institutionalized hierarchy of obaship in Oyo State. My curious inquiry from some people however shows that the governor is not happy that the Alaafin did not support him during the last gubernatorial election. While I am not privileged to know the truth or otherwise of that claim, I will however advise our new governor to refrain from any bitterness against the incumbent Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi
I may not be a fan of Oba Adeyemi, but that does not blindfold me from seeing the exalted office of the Alaafin as an important Yoruba stool. Even as an Ibadan man which I am from both sides of my parentage, I do not feel comfortable with the governor recognizing the Olubadan before the Alaafin in his acceptance speech as governor of Oyo State. So whatever may be the prejudice of Governor Makinde against the Alaafin, he should not take it to any undesirable extreme. He should mend fences with the foremost Yoruba monarch so that Oyo State can move forward in the interest of Oyo State and good governance.
