Zamfara zakat board to clothe, feed 40,000 orphans

THE Zamfara State Zakat and Endowment Board is set to distribute clothes and food items to no fewer than 40,000 orphans and underprivileged persons in the state as part of Ramadan largesse.

The Executive Secretary of the board, Malam Bashir Surajo, disclosed that beneficiaries had been selected from all the 17 emirates in the state.

Speaking at the launch of the distribution of Ramadan foods and clothes to orphans and underprivileged persons last week in Gusau, Malam Surajo said 1,800 orphans from each of the 17 emirates, 3,600 from Gusau, the state capital, and others registered at the board’s headquarters were to benefit from the government’s gesture during the holy month.

He explained that each person would get grains and cloth with cash for sewing of the cloth, adding that thousands of bags of assorted grains, sugar, wrappers and brocade had been procured by the state government for distribution to orphans across the state.

In his remark at the event, the state governor, Abdul-Aziz Yari, said the establishment of the zakat board was aimed at drawing up a comprehensive programme for orphans and other underprivileged persons in the society.

He urged wealthy individuals and corporate organisations to take interest in establishing centres for the welfare of orphans and the needy.

Governor Yari implored officials entrusted with the distribution to be fair and just in the course of the exercise as anybody caught in the act of diversion or misappropriation would be made to face the law.

He called on individuals and groups to be exceptionally charitable during this period of Ramadan.
