2027: Ex-NRM guber candidate defects to SDP

Published by

Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Cross River has received a major political boost with the defection of Mr. Patrick Solomon, former gubernatorial candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) in the 2023 general elections.

Solomon, who formally announced his decision to join the SDP, described the move as a product of deep reflection and conviction, rather than political convenience, declaring that Cross River State urgently needs purposeful leadership anchored on integrity, competence and people-oriented governance.

Addressing party leaders, members and supporters, Solomon said his defection marked “a new beginning.”

“Today, I officially announced my defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). This decision is rooted in conviction and in my belief that Cross River State deserves better,” he said.

“This is not just about changing party colours; it is about changing direction and returning power, accountability and opportunity to the people.”

He added that his alignment with the SDP was informed by the party’s principles of social justice, inclusive development and transparent governance, noting that these ideals resonated strongly with his vision for the state.

Solomon outlined a development agenda focused primarily on infrastructure renewal and good governance, unveiling what he termed a Cross River Infrastructure Renaissance—a long-term blueprint aimed at durable and functional projects rather than short-lived interventions.

According to him, priority areas would include the rehabilitation of rural and urban roads to boost agriculture and commerce, expansion of power infrastructure to support small industries and job creation, as well as the revitalisation of coastal and tourism assets to unlock new revenue streams.

On governance, Solomon pledged to end what he described as “governance by favoritism and secrecy,” promising a merit-based system for appointments and contracts, alongside the introduction of a digital open-governance portal that would allow citizens to track budgets, projects and public spending in real time.

The State Chairman, Mrs Stella Asuquo, expressed the party’s delight in welcoming Solomon “back home.” She highlighted that his experience, visibility in politics, and acceptance across the state would enhance the SDP’s framework and electoral chances.

“This gathering signifies that nothing can obstruct a moving train once its engineers have decided to get it going. We view everyone here as engineers of the SDP initiative, and with unity, foresight, and preparation, we will elevate this party to new heights.”

The Chairman, represented by the Vice Chairman Central, Dr. Ekwom Silas, emphasized that the SDP serves as a platform for dreamers and upcoming leaders. He encouraged members, especially the youth, to have faith in their ability to lead and bring about change rather than seeking validation on overcrowded political platforms.

Additionally, Comrade Kennedy Nsan, who spoke on Solomon’s behalf at the event, noted that the former NRM candidate had long admired and been part of the SDP and has now decided to fully integrate and pursue his political ambitions within the party.

Nsan described the SDP as one of Nigeria’s strongest opposition parties with nationwide and diaspora structures, expressing confidence that Solomon’s defection would further energise the party in Cross River.

He noted that Solomon, who is currently in the United States, is expected to return to Nigeria in the coming weeks to formally engage party stakeholders and supporters across the state.

Party leaders from the three senatorial districts welcomed Solomon’s return to the SDP, describing his defection as a significant gain and a signal of the party’s growing appeal in the state.

Party members expressed optimism that the entry of a former governorship candidate would enhance the party’s visibility, cohesion and competitiveness in the state’s political landscape.
