As the 2023 general election gathers momentum, politicians in Delta State have been advised not to campaign around the official secretariat of the state council of traditional rulers.
This was contained in a communique issued at the end of the monthly meeting of the monarchs held in Asaba, the state capital, on Monday.
The chairman of the Council of Traditional Rulers, Obi (Dr) Emmanuel Efeizomor II, the Obi of Owa, read the communique. He was flanked by the First Vice Chairman, Major – General Felix Mujakperuo (retd), the Orodjie of Okpe, and the Second Vice Chairman, Pere Stanley Perediegha Luke, Kalanama VIII, the Pere of Akugbene – Mein.
The monarchs, rather than turning the secretariat to a venue for political campaign visitations and consultations, politicians should take their messages to the traditional rulers at the zonal level from where the message can be communicated to other monarchs at the grassroots level.
“The council advised politicians who wish to visit traditional rulers at the state’s Council Secretariat to consider carrying out such visitations to the traditional rulers at their zonal level for onwards transmission of their messages to other grassroots traditional rulers,” the communique read.
The council also used the occasion to call on all road users to be mindful of the “ember” season and tread with caution for safety reasons.
The traditional rulers urged all Delta people to embrace peace in all activities and support government’s efforts towards sustained security in the state.
The council congratulated Okowa who was honoured as the ‘Best Performing Governor of the Year in Infrastructure Development in Nigeria’ by the Nigeria Institute of Civil Engineers (NICE), in Asaba, recently.
They also reiterated their continued support and loyalty to the government of Okowa and passed a vote of confidence on his administration.
The council mourned the passage of a former Military Administrator of Delta State, Air Commodore Ibrahim Kefas, who died recently.
The meeting was attended by traditional rulers from across the three senatorial districts in the state.
