Lagos State governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has promised to give 20 cars to head teachers in the 20 local government areas of the state and free eye glasses to other teachers in the state.
The governor made the pledge at the launch and graduation ceremony of EkoExcel Teachers Professional Development and Training Programme held at the Blue Roof in Ikeja, Lagos on Saturday.
Sanwo-Olu, who further promised to put up an efficient and effective reward system for sterling performance among the teachers in the state, said, “I did promise that the teachers’ rewards would not be when they retire alone. So, I am going to start a process not fully in secondary school but in primary school and I am going to identify the best teachers or head teachers in all the 20 local government areas and we are going to provide vehicles to each of them.”
“I don’t know when they are going to do the exercise but if they can complete the exercise next month, you would see the 20 of the teachers going home with a car each. But the exercise has to be transparent. We need to find out our best teachers. It doesn’t matter to me if they are five years or 15 years on the job.”
Speaking further, the governor said, “I have discovered some of you have eye challenges. So, we would be doing a sight assessment for all of you and we would be providing reading glasses for every one of you.”
Sanwo-Olu urged the teachers to show love to their pupils especially as the country is going through trying times.
“I wish you the very best. When you get back to your classrooms, show genuine concerns to these students; care for them as if they are your own children to make the investment of the EkoExcel programme count,” he added.
