Two men who allegedly assaulted a worker of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) for disconnecting their electricity supply were on Thursday brought before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Olalekan Faguntade, 37 and Ayodeji Ayeni, 40, both male, were brought before Magistrate Bukola Mogaji on a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and criminal damage.
The defendants, who reside at No. 6, Ifesowapo St., in Ogudu area of Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty.
Mogaji, however, granted bail of N50, 000 to each of the defendants with one surety each.
The magistrate said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of the two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case until Aug. 23 for mention.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Donjour Perezi said that the defendants committed the offence on July 21 at their residence.
Perezi said that the defendants and others now at large conspired to assault Mr Oluwafemi Balogun, an official of IKEDC, while he was performing his duty.
The prosecutor said that the complainant was effecting a disconnection order on customers who defaulted in the payment of their bills when the defendants attacked him.
“The complainant disconnected the power supply to the defendants’ residence over huge debts.
“They dragged him down from the ladder and descended on him with several blows which caused some injuries to his body.
“They also damaged the fibre made ladder valued at N100, 000.
“The case was reported and the defendants were arrested,” the prosecutor said.
The offence contravened Sections 171, 339(1) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 171 stipulates one-year imprisonment for assault, while Section 411 prescribes two years for conspiracy.
