THE National and Plateau State executives of the University of Jos Alumni Association (UJAA) has condemned the recent attack by gunmen on residence of the Vice Chancellor University of Jos, Professor Sebastine Maimako, where two security men lost their lives.
It would be recalled that gunmen invaded the private residence of the new VC in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State and killed two security men while, three others sustained injuries. The vice chancellor was outside the country when the incident occurred.
Professor Maimako took over as the vice chancellor of UNIJOS on June 22nd 2016, succeeding Professor Hayward Mafuyai after the expiration of his five-year tenure.
Speaking during a visit to the vice chancellor in his office, the national president of UJAA, Mr Idris Yakubu said they were in Jos for a retreat in honour of the newly inaugurated executives of UJAA and also to come and identify with the VC on the unfortunate incident, adding that UJAA is saddened with the sad news.
He stated: “the University of Jos Alumni Association is solidly behind you and your management team. We will give you all the necessary support in your determination to move University of Jos to greater heights.”
Proessor Mamaiko, while responding commended UJAA for standing by him, at the turbulent moment, adding that the visit had further strengthened him and to be strong despite the situation.
The VC informed that he was in far away Ghana saying while his team was being hosted by the vice chancellor of University of Ghana, he was informed on the phone that suspected gunmen attack his residence in Jos and shot a security guard, while three others were seriously wounded.
He thanked the university community for standing by him and his family at the moment of grief, urging the security operative to ensure that the perpetrators of the crime are brought to book.
