IN continuation of its 2016 convocation ceremonies, the University of Ibadan, on Wednesday, conferred various honours on 4,022 candidates who have completed higher degrees and post graduate diplomas in various programmes from the institution.
This was disclosed by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Idowu Olayinka, in his remarks at the postgraduate convocation ceremonies, which was held at the International Conference Centre, UI, Ibadan.
It will be recalled that this year’s convocation ceremony started with the award of undergraduate degree on Monday, where 117 graduates bagged First Class Degree in various courses
Meanwhile, the award of higher degrees, including Masters degrees. M. Phil/MPH in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Public Health, Dentistry and Law commenced on Wednesday at the International Conference Centre.
The breakdown of the figure, according to Professor Olayinka, revealed that 442 candidates bagged Ph.D, one candidate bagged M.D, 30 completed their MPhil, 93 MPH, 2,940 obtained Academic Masters, 407 Professional Masters and 109 Postgraduate Diploma degrees.
Professor Olayinka said: “Our new and existing postgraduate programmes are popular and acceptable. Eloquent testimony to this is the fact that a total number of 12,301 applications were received during the 2015/2016 academic session, while only 6,520 qualified candidates were offered admission for various programmes.
“A total of 4,022 candidates will be receiving their respective higher degrees and postgraduate diplomas.
“A breakdown of the 4,022 graduands includes: Ph.D 442, M.D 1, MPhil 30, MPH 93, Academic Masters 2,940, Professional Masters 407 and Postgraduate Diploma 109.”
He further reiterated that the vision of the university is tied to the pursuit of the national goals of development through knowledge creation and dissemination.
He added that the realisation of the vision is reflected in the commitment to the continuous development of teaching, learning and research programmes that would provide the required skills for internalising the development process and to serve as catalyst for the political, social and economic development of the nation.
