IT was very saddening when we saw on television and read in the newspapers that there was confusion last week Tuesday at the popular Ajala Bus Stop, Ijaiye area, on the Lagos-Abeokuta highway, in Lagos, as residents uncovered an underground ritualists’ den in the area.
What many of us found disheartening was the report by eyewitnesses who said the ritualists might have been operating for a long time, following a near-death experience of a lodger, who had come to stay at a hotel near the scene of the discovery.
It is now established, and even long before now, that the need to beef up security in many areas of our nation should be taken seriously. The Lagos and Ogun states’ governments should rise up to the challenge. This is necessary and should therefore be seen as collaborative. Residents and commuters should be saved from the nefarious activities of these people who go about killing, maiming for ritual purposes.
The police cannot do this alone. The entire security agencies should work with the police to secure lives of citizens and other nationalities. There is also the need to recruit more security personnel so that the challenge of under-policing our states can be addressed. The perpetrators of these terrible acts including their collaborators should be apprehended and dealt with. No stone should be left unturned.
As citizens, we must see to it that we are vigilant and help our law-enforcement agents in helping to keep us safe. The security agents can only function adequately based on the intelligence report that we feed them.
