The House of Representatives on Thursday called on the Federal Government to urgently explore the possibility of empowering the six geo-political zones of the country with the strategic establishment of different industries peculiar to the various zones for economic growth and sustainable development of the country.
The House also mandated the House committee on governmental affairs to ensure implementation and report back to the House within eight weeks for further legislative action.
The House resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Honourable Chukwuemeka Anohu entitled, “Call for development of six geo-economic zones”.
According to him, “Nigeria is currently undergoing economic recession which is owed in large part to the mono-economic system the country has practised for decades”.
The lawmaker also maintained that, despite the 36 states structure and the Federal capital territory, Abuja that constitute the Nigerian state, the country still operates a six geo-political zonal structure administratively, when dealing with the apportioning of political offices and appointments.
To this end, he implored that there was need to fashion out sound economic principles and political will by the federal government to site strategic and economically vibrant industries in each of the six zones in Nigeria in order to drive and sustain the economy of those zones, and the country in general.
Taking such step, he said would be a sure recipe for pulling the economy out of recession for an enduring development.
The motion was supported by member when it was put to vote by the Speaker, Honourable Yakubu Dogara.
