THE governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last Saturday election in Ondo State, Mr Eyitayo Jegede, on Sunday, said he is still studying the outcome of the governorship election and will react at the appropriate time.
Jegede, who stated this in Akure, Ondo State capital, while reacting to the outcome of the last Saturday governorship election, which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate as the winner of the poll.
Jegede noted that the event that led to election where his name was substituted by the INEC and replaced with Mr Jimoh Ibrahim, served as setback for the party in the election, saying he was cleared by the Appeal Court some two days to the election.
He said the party approached the INEC for postponement of the election in order to allow him to campaign, but said the request was turned down and had no option, but to take part in the election.
He said “The events that led to the election are known to us and you. We had 48 hours to prepare for the election; I was cleared by the court on Wednesday and had only Thursday to campaign and on Saturday I had to go for election.
“The request for postponement was denied by INEC for reasons that we are yet to fathom and this is the things in the next few days we will have to review.”
He commended the people of the state for their belief in him and for standing with him and the party saying “I know we have won the heart of the people and I should thank our people for standing by us, for their show of love and for their steadfastness. We are studying the situation and in the fullness of time you will know what’s the position of the party is.”
Also speaking the Chairman of the party in the state, Clement Faboyede, disclosed that all the stakeholders will meet on Monday and said the decision of the party would be made public soon.
Faboyede also attributed the .party’s loss to the litigation over the authentic candidate of the party in the election and said “We thank God for the litigation processes and at the end of the day we came out victorious and our heart desired candidate for PDP was cleared to contest the election, but few days to the election and there was no time for campaign and to prepare for the election, we will meet soon to x-ray every angle and get across to the public”
However, the former Director General of the National Sports Commission, Gbemga Elegbeleye, has congratulated the new governor elect, Akeredolu, saying the victory is well deserved and said Akeredol’s victory is for the common man in the state.
He said “It was victory for democracy and victory against tyranny and self serving leadership. Victory against imposition and negative politics. I hope his victory will put an end to politics of playing one community against others all in guise of a selfish agenda.”
He however assured the people of the state that the new government will turn around the state positively within a couple of months.
