CHIEF Medical Director (CMD), University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Professor Temtitope Alonge said normalcy has returned to provision of emergency care at the hospital with the establishment of a make shift temporary emergency unit at its general outpatient department.
Alonge, speaking on how the hospital had coped with the incident, said drugs and other consumables of patients on admission in the unit had already been replaced by the hospital.
The CMD, who said psychological counselling were also provided because of the trauma of the incident, assured that work was ongoing to rebuild the burnt portion of the unit.
He declared: “We had commenced clearing and demolition of the weak and damaged structures and we are going to replace the roof within the next 48 hours.”
Alonge, who assured that electricity had been restored to the hospital, declared that the hospital’s efforts to have its own fire engine as part of measures to avoid any fire incident had failed, because it was not assented to in the hospital in 2011 and 2012 budget.
However, he said it might not be possible to stop sparks of fire now and again, given that UCH was a big establishment.
Alonge, who asked that the public would come to the aid of the hospital by making available a fire engine, expressed appreciation for the joint effort the hospital staff put into putting out the fire, with some even getting injured.
