A Nigerian nurse, Uzoamaka Uja, has received the Joanne Ruiz Achievement Award for Excellence in clinical practice in HIV.
Uja, Abia State Malaria Programme Manager, was recently presented with the award in Atlanta Georgia, United States.
She is the only African and Nigerian who received this all important award.
Uja is globally recognised for her knowledge and skill in caring for people with HIV and their vulnerable families.
The organisers said Uja merited the award “as an outstanding nurse who is a source of pride to self, peers, patients, communities and colleagues.”
She was described as “the nurse you would most want to care for your loved ones.”
The award was named after Joanne Ruiz, who was one of the first nurses in the United States to become infected with the HIV disease through occupational exposure.
