THE Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has commended the World Bank for its support and contributions to government’s efforts in the development of the education sector in the country.
The minister made the commendation when, a team of World Bank education specialists paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Abuja.
The World Bank group has been helping to fight poverty and improve living standards for the people of Nigeria through various projects in addition to trust funds. One of its recent projects is the $100 million grant to five states to improve girl-child education.
Tunde Adekola, Senior Education Specialist at the World Bank, had listed the five states to include Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa and Sokoto.
Adamu expressed satisfaction with the World Bank’s various interventions at all levels of the education system, noting, however, that the major challenge in executing some intended programmes was inadequate fund.
He, therefore, appealed for more support from the bank and assuring that such fund would be judiciously used.
Speaking earlier, Mr Roland Lomme, World Bank Senior Governance Specialist, briefed the minister on the bank’s interventions in the education sector.
He disclosed that there was available fund to intervene in strengthening of institutions in the system and technical and vocational education.
World Bank runs various intervention programmes in Nigeria, including State Education Programme Investment Project targeted at strengthening the system.
