A former deputy governorship candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and frontline opposition figure in Benue State, Alhaji Usman Abubakar, has revealed his roles in making the All Progressive Congress (APC) a ruling party in the state today.
Abubakar, who spoke to newsmen in his Otukpo residence, said he was responsible for the movement of former Governor George Akume from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the then ACN, where he also got ticket to run for and won a senatorial election.
“I was one of the nucleuses that formed what is today known as APC in Benue. I brought virtually everybody on board, including Akume. Chief Audu Ogbeh and I gave Akume the ticket to run for the Senate in 2011.
“But when they came from the PDP, unknown to me, I thought they were coming to fuse and form a compound rather than a mixture.
“Alas, they came with all kinds of radicalism, including and imposition. When I realised that I was the only voice against these social and political radicals, I asked myself, ‘can you change these people’, the answer was no.
“So, instead of making myself a conformist, because I detest conformism, I decided to pull myself aside, so that history will vindicate me. That was why I exiled myself from the APC and decided to pitch my tent with the opposition, because I am a fighter. I am a political fundamentalist,” he said.
