THE Ekiti State House of Assembly has said that the state airport project was stopped because of subsisting court judgment secured by land owners and plantation farmers displaced from the project’s proposed site, adding that; “the House of Assembly did not, and cannot stop the project.”
The House of Assembly, which reacted to a publication in some newspapers that it directed the stoppage of the airport project, said the House Leader of Government Business, Honourable Olatunji Akinyele, was misrepresented in the report.
In a release issued on Wednesday by the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Chief Olugboyega Aribisogan, the Assembly said; “We don’t award contracts and it is not our duty to stop government projects.
“From information available to us, the state government only put the project on hold in obedience to the court judgment got by the land owners and plantation farmers displaced from the project’s proposed site and as soon as the ongoing litigation is dispensed with, the project will commence.”
Speaking further, Honourable Aribisogan said; “The State House of Assembly, being partner in progress with the Governor Ayodele Fayose-led government, remains on the same page with the governor on the airport project as well as other legacy projects of the state government, and we will continue to give legislative backing to all developmental activities of the government.”
While commending the state governor on the feat achieved by the state in this year’s National Examination Council (NECO) Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), the Assembly said the various intervention programmes of the government in the education sector should be sustained.
