The Deputy Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Honourable Friday Osanebi, has empowered some market women in fulfillment of his election promise.
The deputy speaker made the donation at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Ibrede in Ndokwa East Local Government Area during a special thanksgiving service.
Among the beneficiaries were two elderly women, who received instant cash awards.
It was also disclosed that the eldest women in Onogbokor and Iyede-Ame will receive monthly stipends.
To avoid the politicisation of the empowerment scheme, scores of women from Anyama , Lagos Iyede, Awah, Onogbokor, Iyede-Ame, Igbuku and Ibrede communities in ward nine, who worshipped at the church were personally interviewed by Honourable Osanebi to determine their actual trade and peculiar needs.
At the end of the exercise, 24 women, who fulfilled the basic requirements as traders, received cheques for various sums to improve on their trades in commodities like fish, garri, palm oil, provisions, soft drinks and beer, while others got electric generating sets, hair dryers and fridges.
The highpoint of the church empowerment programme was the award of scholarship to a young girl to go to school instead of trading and a cheque of N100,000 to a woman for her devotion to God through dancing.
