THE former gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Nasarawa State and national secretary of the party, Labaran Maku, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of economic and social emergency in the state as a result poor governance.
Maku, who made the call on Wednesday, while addressing newsmen at his residence in Wakama village of Nasarawa-Eggon Local Government Area of the state, urged the president to send a bill to the National Assembly requesting for the constitution of a management committee for the state.
He explained that although it might not be constitutional for the president to act in that line but the president should invoke the doctrine of necessity to save the lives of the dying Nasarawa people.
“In the last five years, the government had borrowed over N50 billion aside the monthly allocations and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
“This is not to mention other interventions such as ecological funds, SURE-P monies, N400 million for flood victims since 2012, in addition to the recent bailout given to states by the president.
“They should as a matter of urgency declare a state of economic and social emergencies and constitute a team of people of good conscience to manage the finances of the state pending when people of integrity takes over leadership in the state,” he said.
Maku lamented that despite the huge loans and revenue collected by the government, salaries are not paid saying workers are rather greeted with 50 per cent salary discount.
The former Minister of Information also said that, President Buhari needs to act fast because Governor Al-makura came to power in 2011 under the president’s party the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).
He also decried how the legislative arm of government in the state have turned to an extension of the executive arm of government saying they have paid deaf ears to the yearnings and aspirations of their constituents.
Maku who described the state as a failed state, called for the immediate reinstatement of the six suspended lawmaker of the state House of Assembly, saying they are heroes of their constituents for fighting against the constitution of sole administrators in local government areas in the state.
