Dead persons are said to be collecting salary in Chikun Local Government Council of Kaduna State years after their demise.
Findings by Arewa revealed that hundreds of workers, who had neither retired from service or got transferred to other local government areas several years ago were still featuring in the payroll of the local government.
The situation had forced the local government to delay the payment of salaries because of the number of workers on its payroll
Commenting on the development, the Interim chairperson of the local government, Hajiya Hadiza Ladi Yahuza, said “it is true we have got many dead persons whose names are still featuring on our payroll”.
However, she was quick to add, that the local government was working hard to remove ghost workers from its payroll.
According to her, “on the payroll we have got some interesting issues. Some staff that have died are still featuring on our payroll, even some staff that are retired are still featuring, some staff that have left long ago to other local governments are still featuring on the payroll.
She added “we have about 60 of the workers not verified by us still featuring on the payroll. So we hope that by next month, we will have a clean payroll in the local government.”
She said the most challenging issue before the local government chairmen in the state was the payment of workers’ salaries because of the ghost workers syndrome.
‘We are doing all we can to make sure that we have a clean pay roll in the system to be able to pay the staff what is due to them.”
