Nigerian-German musician, producer and activist, Ade Bantu, has described as unnecessary the desire for validation from the West often shown by Nigerian musicians.
In a recent interview with Hip TV, the singer said rather than focus on the international audience, Nigerian artists recognise that their primary consumers and fans are audiences from Nigeria and the rest of Africa.
The leader of the Bantu band added that international recognition needn’t be a singer’s major goal. He said Nigerian singers needn’t win a Grammy or an Oscar or even be involved in collaborations with foreign artistes in order to become relevant. He said while those were commendable milestones, they did not represent a standard with which to gauge an artiste’s worth.
