FORMER President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has said that lack of oneness among the people of Ogun West senatorial district was the major reason the area had not produced a governor more than 40 years after Ogun State was created.
Obasanjo made this comment while receiving host to members of the League of Yewa-Awori Media Practitioners, who paid a visit on him at his Hill Top Presidential residence in Abeokuta.
“Each time Ogun West presented any candidate for an election, it always divided their votes and this had been the major reason for the abortion of their long-conceived dream of producing a governor,” he said.
During an interactive session, Obasanjo who said he believed in equity and justice, also identified with the plight of Ogun West.
While advising the media practitioners to also play their role to portray the image of the state positively and thus correct the long-held misconception of people about Yewa-Awori, that “Yewa-Awori does not have sons and daughters that are qualified to occupy the seat,” Obasanjo assured the group of his unflinching support to help it excel.
He also acknowledged the role of the media in this period, saying that journalists had been derogated over time, especially the community media.
A former Head of State, Abdulsalam Abubakar, also on a courtesy visit to Obasanjo was introduced to the group. He also encouraged them to keep up with their vision as an indivisible body.
Some of the group members in attendance during the visit include Elhadj Abu-Satar Idowu Hamed (National Coordinator), Mr Akindele Akinola, Mr Deji Adeyemi, Mr Wole Banmeke, Mr Rufai Abiola, Miss Balqis Ilufemiloye, Miss Mayomikun Fadipe and Mr Lekan Ajibogun.
