ABOUT 120 lawyers in Delta State are currently being investigated for alleged professional misconducts.
The state’s Chief Judge, Justice Marshal Umukoro confirmed the trial to journalists in Asaba, last week.
He said the case against the offenders was being handled by Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee, LPDC, Body of Benchers of Nigeria.
Justice Umukoro opined that he was not against petitions of merit against Judicial Officers, but frowned at lawyers who had formed the habit of writing frivolous petitions, only to withdraw same when proceeding commenced.
“I am not against the petitions of merit against judicial officers who breach the code of judicial conduct for officers, but I will not be happy to see frivolous petitions by lawyers, some are withdrawn before proceeding commences,” he warned.
According to him, over the years, lawyers in the state have formed the habit of writing petitions that are hardly substantiated.
He disclosed that the lawyers currently standing trials would enjoy fair-hearing by the committee.
He added that ongoing sanity in the legal system of the country must be upheld and sustained.
Meanwhile, Justice Umukoro has charged law students in the state to imbibe the virtues of honesty, humility and hardwork in order to achieve success in their chosen careers.
